Temporo Mandibular Joint Dysfunction

If you’ve noticed a clicking or popping sound when opening and closing your mouth, it could be a symptom of temporomandibular joint dysfunction – commonly referred to as TMJ dysfunction.

Your TMJ joint acts as a hinge, connecting your jaw to the temporal bones in front of each ear. Problems with this hinge can cause pain in the joint and the muscles that control jaw movement.

Symptoms of TMJ dysfunction include:

  • frequent headaches
  • neck aches
  • tooth sensitivity
  • sinusitis
  • ringing in your ears
  • grinding your teeth
  • pain in your jaw muscles

The most extreme form of TMJ dysfunction involves an arthritic condition of the jaw joint. If left untreated, it can cause problems with your teeth and gums and the bone structure of your mouth.

Fortunately, we have a range of treatments available to help. These may include physical therapy, muscle relaxants, heat and ice therapy, medications and using a mouth appliance when sleeping.


Snoring can be extremely frustrating for couples if one partner is being kept awake by the other. Equally worrying is the possibility of sleep apnoea – a condition where the airways become blocked and interfere with your quality of sleep.

In general, snoring happens when air is unable to move freely through your nose and mouth. This can be because of a narrowed airway, nasal and sinus problems, being overweight and poor sleep posture.

At your appointment, we’ll discuss your symptoms and specific concerns, such as whether you choke, gasp or hold your breath during your sleep. We’ll also ask about your physical symptoms, such as if you wake up tired in the morning, experience insomnia or frequently wake up with headaches.
